Weddings aboard a cruise ship offer a unique combination of festive atmosphere and the shared experience of a journey. Recently, I had the privilege of documenting such a celebration as a wedding photographer aboard the Thurgau Prestige from Thurgau Travel. The three-day voyage began in Basel, taking us along picturesque landscapes on the Rhine to Strasbourg, France.

Day 1: The Wedding Kickoff in Basel – Getting Acquainted and Settling In

The first day began in Basel, where guests boarded the ship. From the very first meeting, it was clear how much the couple valued a personal and intimate atmosphere. A relaxed meet-and-greet provided the perfect opportunity for guests to get to know one another. The evening ended with a stylish dinner, accompanied by lighthearted conversations and a calm, welcoming vibe.

Day 2: Exploring Strasbourg and Wedding Preparations

The second day was dedicated to exploration and preparations. While guests had the chance to visit Strasbourg with its charming old town or nearby Kehl, the wedding preparations were in full swing aboard the ship.

The bride got ready in her suite, accompanied by her maid of honor. Every detail, from the dress to the accessories, was carefully chosen to reflect the couple’s personal style. Meanwhile, the groom took a quiet moment in his cabin with his best man to prepare for the special occasion.

One particularly touching moment was when the bride’s father came to escort her. His pride and joy were unmistakable.

The Ceremony on the Sun Deck

The ceremony took place in the early afternoon on the upper deck, under open skies with the Rhine as a stunning backdrop. The ship’s captain officiated the ceremony, as guests listened attentively and were visibly moved by the couple exchanging their vows.

The simple, maritime setting gave the ceremony a unique sense of intimacy. As a wedding photographer, it was a delight to capture this moment – the emotions, glances, and gestures that made the day so special.

Aperitif and Portraits on the Cruise Ship

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed an aperitif on the sun deck. The couple and I then took the opportunity for a brief portrait session aboard the ship. The decks and the ship’s architecture provided a distinctive backdrop for their wedding portraits.

Dinner and Dancing in the Ship’s Hall

The evening began with a fine dinner in the ship’s dining hall. The couple’s first dance kicked off the evening festivities. The atmosphere was lively and joyful, with everyone coming together to celebrate and close the day on a high note.

A Unique Experience: Weddings on a Cruise Ship

A wedding aboard a cruise ship seamlessly combines the festive with the adventurous. The ever-changing scenery, the special atmosphere, and the intimacy cultivated onboard make such a wedding truly unforgettable.
